Chinese J-16 fighter jets flew one-on-one combat drills against Egyptian Air Force Rafales on August 23, 2026, during the second edition of the Eagles of Civilization joint exercise in Egypt. It was the first time any Chinese fighter had sparred with the Rafale in a formal training setting. Footage released by the PLA Air Force showed close-range maneuvering under what Beijing described as combat-realistic conditions, with pilots from both sides briefing each other on their aircraft beforehand.
For India, the headline is hard to ignore. The Rafale is the spearhead of the Indian Air Force's high-end fleet. If tensions with China ever escalated into open air combat along the Line of Actual Control, PLAAF fighters would almost certainly meet IAF Rafales in the most demanding engagements. Any chance for Chinese pilots to study how a Rafale flies, turns, accelerates, and fights in visual range is therefore worth noting.
What China Gains
Egypt operates a standard export configuration of the Rafale. It is not identical to the Indian variant, which carries India-specific enhancements, different weapons fit, and tighter integration with Indian surveillance and command networks. Even so, the exercise still offers Chinese aviators a baseline understanding of the aircraft's handling, energy management, and close-combat behavior. That is useful intelligence, even if it falls well short of a full operational picture.
The drill also fits a broader pattern in PLA Air Force training. Last year's Eagles of Civilization exercise sent J-10 fighters to Egypt. This year brought the heavier J-16, along with tanker and support aircraft. Beijing is clearly investing in overseas air combat training against Western-designed platforms, and the Rafale is one of the most capable fighters in that category.
The J-16 that participated is itself a derivative of the Su-30, developed from the same Flanker design family that China originally acquired from Russia and then adapted into its own production line. That detail matters for India. The IAF operates the Su-30MKI in large numbers and its pilots know the strengths and limits of that airframe as well as anyone. A Chinese pilot learning how a Rafale handles against a Flanker derivative in Egypt is not discovering something India's own air force has never thought about.
Nothing New in the Logic
This is not, by itself, a shocking development. Friendly air forces train against each other's hardware all the time, and India does the same thing for the same reasons.
The Indian Air Force conducts annual Joint Military Training with Singapore at Kalaikunda, where Republic of Singapore Air Force F-16s regularly train alongside IAF Su-30MKIs, Rafales, and other types. Singapore's F-16 fleet is among the most modern in the region. For Indian pilots, especially those flying Sukhoi fighters, that exposure helps sharpen tactics against an aircraft that remains the backbone of the Pakistan Air Force.
India has also taken part in Israel's Blue Flag exercise, where Israeli F-16 squadrons, including dedicated aggressor units, simulate enemy air threats. The logic is straightforward. If a potential adversary relies heavily on a particular platform, it helps to practice against that platform or something close to it while the stakes are still peacetime training.
China's Rafale drills with Egypt should be read in that same frame. Both sides are trying to learn. The question for India is not whether the exercise happened, but how much of what was learned would survive contact with an actual Indian combat package.
Where India Differs
A Rafale in Egyptian service and a Rafale in IAF service are not the same proposition in battle.
India's jets come with India-specific enhancements tailored to how the IAF fights. That includes weapons, sensors, and mission software chosen for Indian operational requirements, including high-altitude conditions along the northern border. More importantly, the aircraft is meant to operate as part of a networked Indian air battle, not as a standalone fighter trading turns in a one-on-one drill.
The same applies to the pilots. IAF aviators train extensively in the harsh weather and broken terrain of the Himalayas, where low visibility, thin air, and sudden weather shifts are part of the routine. They practice terrain-hugging flight to stay below radar coverage and use valleys and ridgelines to approach targets or break contact. That is a very different skill set from flying over open desert under clear skies. When Chinese pilots eventually face Indian Rafale crews, they will not be up against Egyptian aviators operating in Egypt's flat, arid training environment. They will be up against pilots who are accustomed to fighting in mountains, where the ground itself becomes part of the tactical plan.
That is where the Integrated Air Command and Control System becomes the real differentiator. IACCS links airborne fighters with ground radars, AWACS platforms such as Netra and Phalcon, and command centres into a single operational picture. A pilot does not need to discover everything alone in the cockpit. Targeting cues, threat updates, and broader situational awareness can be pushed in real time to whichever fighter is airborne and best placed to act. In a fight against China, that network-centric edge may matter as much as raw aircraft performance.
Egypt's exercise, by contrast, was built around bilateral pilot exchange and dissimilar one-on-one combat over desert airspace. That is valuable training, but it is not a substitute for understanding how IAF Rafales would enter a fight in the mountains, already cued by Indian surveillance and command systems, flown by crews trained to use terrain as cover.
What New Delhi Must Do
The August drills are a reminder that China is actively closing gaps in its understanding of Western-origin fighters. India can take comfort in its tactical edge, but comfort alone does not fill squadrons.
The IAF's authorised fighter strength has been sliding for years, and the gap between paper strength and deployable numbers is now impossible to ignore. China, meanwhile, is adding J-20 and other modern fighters to the PLAAF at a pace that India has simply not matched. Beijing is not waiting for lengthy procurement cycles. It is building fifth-generation capacity while also sending its pilots abroad to train against the same aircraft India relies on at the sharp end.
New Delhi needs to respond with equal urgency on numbers. The first step is to ramp up Rafale induction and clear the bottlenecks that have slowed the Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft programme and other urgent acquisitions. India already knows the aircraft works. What it lacks is enough of them, delivered quickly enough to arrest the decline in squadron strength.
That cannot be the whole answer. Greater funding and faster progress on the Tejas Mk2 and the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft are just as critical. India needs a credible indigenous pipeline that can replenish the fleet at scale, not one flagship import and years of delay on the programmes meant to follow it. Tejas Mk2 can bridge the gap in the medium term. AMCA is the long-term answer to staying competitive against a neighbour that is mass-producing modern fighters.
The Egyptian exercise should not be read as a reason for panic. It should be read as a prompt for action. China is training against Rafales today while rolling out fifth-generation jets in large numbers. India still has the better pilots, the better terrain, and the better networked air battle for a Himalayan fight. But without faster induction, fewer procurement bottlenecks, and serious investment in Tejas Mk2 and AMCA, those advantages will be spread too thin across too few squadrons. That is the imbalance New Delhi cannot afford to leave unattended.
